How the sacrament of Baptism is Celebrated
Before the sacrament begins, the one being baptized wears a white garment that symbolizes that the person baptiezed has "put on Christ." And a candle is lit from the Easter candle that signfies that Christ has enlightend the neophyer, and the ones baptized are "the light of the world".
Begining with the sign of the cross, on the threshold of the celebration, marks with the imprint of Christ the one who is going to belong to him and signifies the grace of redemption Christ won for us by his cross.
Second, the proclamation of the Word of God enlightens the candiate and the assembly with the revealed truth and elicits the response of faith.
Third, the celebrant lays his hands on him, and he explictly renounces Satan. This prepares him to confess the faith of the church to which he will be entrusted by baptism.
Fourth, before the baptism the baptismal water is consecrated by prayer at the Easter Vigil. The church asks God that through his Son the power of the Holy Spirit may be sent upon the water, so that the one being baptised be born of water and the Spirit, the water is then poured by the celebrant over the canidates head. During this time the minister says "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
Fifth, the anointing with sacred chrism, perfumed oil blessed by the Bishop, signifies the gift of the Holy Spirit to the newly baptized, who become Christian and now called one "annointed" by the Holy Spirit. This is incorportated into Christ who is anointed priest, prophet, and king.
Last, The solemn blessing concludes the celebration of baptism.
